BRIDES magazine, America’s #1
leading bridal publication and MARTINI and ROSSI Asti hosted the largest
wedding cake event ever with CAKEWALK AT GRAND CENTRAL, a celebration of the
latest trends in artistic confections, held Tuesday May 24 - Thursday May
26, 2005 in Vanderbilt Hall at the historic New York City Terminal. The
first of its kind in the country, CAKEWALK AT GRAND CENTRAL, is a gallery
exhibition of 50 exquisitely decorated wedding cakes created by premier
sugar artists from across the United States, including local cake artist and
Montecito mom Sarah Farmer of Sugar!. Focusing on the wedding cake as edible
art, the event showcases innovative personalized and stylized ideas
incorporated into the tradition of the wedding cake. |
| |
“It is a HUGE honor to be considered among the nations 50 top designers,”
says Farmer. “and the opening night gala was a dream come true! Just being
displayed in the same room next to designers such as Sylvia Weinstock,
Margaret Braun, and Collette Peters was a thrill, but to have someone who
has written books on cake artistry come up to me to say that they loved my
work and my style, well, you can’t imagine how much that means to me! It
felt like I was getting a big ‘high five’ from God that night!"

Known by local Santa Barbarans, celebrities and notables for her artistic
and whimsical style, Ms. Farmer’s cake definitely drew a crowd. Standing
three feet tall and separated by eight dozen blood red sugar roses, each
tier boasted a unique and intricate design based upon a Moroccan theme.
“Chef Karim’s was my inspiration. I love the explosion of color and design
in Middle Eastern interiors. Since a lot of my background is in the arts and
fashion design, fabric and color are strong influences in my creations.” All
hand piped and painted with edible gold and silver leaf, the colossal cake
looked regal and quite at home in it’s opulent setting at Grand Central’s
Vanderbilt Hall. “It certainly stood out,’ recalls Farmer. “The colors and
patterns really worked well together. |

Another stunning attraction of CAKEWALK was the larger than life MARTINI and
ROSSI Asti 15-foot sparkling wine fountain crafted from 400 champagne flutes
and draped with Swarovski crystals to resemble a fantasy wedding cake. |

Also on hand were artists Michelle Bomarito, whom foodies might remember
from Food Networks “Wedding Cake Challenge”, Cheryl Kleinman, Just Fabulous
Cakes, Cakework, Gail Watson, Mike’s Amazing Cakes, and Confetti Cakes,
among others. |

|
Guests also had the opportunity to tour Designer Row, which includes
original cake plate designs by Vera Wang, Oleg Cassini, Badgley Mischka,
Lazaro, Monique Lhuiller, Nicole Miller, Reem Acra, Kenneth Pool for Amsale
and Jenna Lyons for JCrew. The public had a chance to enter to win cake
plates from Designer Row. All donations for cake plates benefitted Flower
Power, whose mission is to re-purpose celebratory flowers after events by
repackaging them into hospital friendly containers to share the healing
power of flowers with elderly, sick and terminally ill individuals in
hospices, nursing homes and hospitals. |
| |
|
“I certainly hope someone takes the cue from Flower Power and starts
something like this in Santa Barbara. In this industry of grand events, I
see a lot of wasted opportunity to brighten up a person’s day. Sometimes the
key to recovery is as simple as a smile.” |
